The Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology (EEOB) is a relatively new department, founded in July of 2003. We are the life-science department at Iowa State University dedicated to exploring the full breadth of biological diversity and the interactions of organisms with each other and the environment. Our research and teaching activities explore all kingdoms of life and levels of biological organization, from molecules to the biosphere. Many fundamental questions in ecology, evolution, and organismal biology are often best explored using integrative approaches that span disciplines and bridge levels of organization. Toward that end, many of our faculty work together and with others on campus using a wide range of tools and technologies, including fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and computational analyses. Through these many research activities and via formal coursework, our department plays a vital role in the training of undergraduate and graduate students in the life sciences.  We offer a curriculum rich in courses in ecology, evolution, and organismal biology and at the interface of these areas with other disciplines.

Please explore our web pages, which introduce our 31 faculty and their many diverse research programs and activities. The Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology department is housed mostly in Bessey Hall on central campus (map and directions). Our building is equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities and equipment for investigations at all levels of biological organization. Major facilities include the Bessey Microscopy Facility, Pohl Conservatory, the Ada Hayden Herbarium, and the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory (off-campus). Potential graduate students may be interested in looking into our interdepartmental graduate programs, through which we offer masters and doctoral degrees and highly competitive stipends and scholarships. Undergraduate and graduate students maybe find helpful information on pages that describe scholarships and courses.

Please feel free to contact one of us about our research activities, undergraduate or graduate courses, or any of our other activities. We welcome your communication.

Sincerely,
Jonathan F. Wendel, Chair
