For many of you, when you recall your time here or think about EEOB, your thoughts naturally turn to classes and tests and the many friendships you made. Others among you might think more about the field or laboratory research you conducted while at ISU, or about the tremendously exciting research the EEOB faculty and students are involved in today.
Please enjoy this latest issue of BioSpheres. A lot has happened since our last issue of Biospheres. In addition to a special focus on ecology, you will read inside about some of the important milestones we celebrated, including Darwin's 200th birthday (!) and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. These anniversaries were celebrated in many ways and in many venues by EEOB, including a departmental gathering complete with period costumes. This past year also witnessed the 125th anniversary of the birth of Ada Hayden, for whom we have named a lovely new park in Ames, providing you with yet another reason to come for a visit. As you also will read in this issue, this past year we also had to say goodbye to some dear friends, including former graduate student Ron Van Nimwegan and Dr. Lois Tiffany, our very special, one-of-kind "mushroom lady." We have honored "Dr. T.", as she was known to most of you perhaps, for her five decades of service to ISU and the state, with a feature article and a cover photograph that captures so much of what we loved about Lois.
As you will undoubtedly realize when you explore our website or read our newsletters, the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology at ISU is a thriving community of scholars and educators where world-class research is being conducted and where students are provided a first-rate education. There are many ways in which you can “bet on this winning ticket”, and toward this end you will find a pdf form to the left for your use in assisting EEOB with its growth. Thank you in advance for your consideration of supporting our activities.
