In my lab at Iowa State University, I maintain year-round,
reproducing cultures of numerous living freshwater invertebrates. Teachers and
students are welcome to visit my lab and I am happy to share tips for culturing
invertebrates. I am also happy to provide, free-of-charge to visiting teachers, living specimens to start their own culture and/or use in their biology classes
(take-home containers and samples of critter food are included, as well).
I have large
cultures of the following freshwater organisms:
| Hydra sp.[feeding] |
|
| Planaria [feeding] | |
| Vinegar eels (nematodes)[locomotion] | |
| Blackworms (Lumbriculus variegatus)[locomotion][circulation][regeneration] | |
| Micro-oligochaetes (family Naididae)[locomotion] | |
| Leeches (Erpobdellids - predator on Lumbriculus)[feeding][locomotion] | |
| Snails (Helisoma trivolvis - ramshorn snail-albino)[circulation][development] | |
| Freshwater limpets (Ferrisia sp)[image] | |
| Fingernail clams [image] | |
| Freshwater isopods [Asellus aquaticus][image] | |
| Ostracods [locomotion] | |
| Cladocerans (daphnids)[locomotion][phototaxis] | |
| Amphipods [image] | |
| Copepods [locomotion] | |
| Artemia (brine shrimp)[development][lab kit] |
