MethodsTaxon SamplingProposed sampling of woody bamboos and outgroups (Oryzeae, Olyreae, Streptogyneae) for the Bamboo Phylogeny Project is available in pdf format. CollectingCollection of bamboos in their native habitats or even in a cultivated setting should be done only after obtaining permits or permission from the appropriate authorities. Vegetative herbarium specimens, if properly prepared, can be identified to genus and species and they provide valuable information about bamboo diversity. Flowering herbarium specimens are naturally also very desirable, but by themselves will not provide all the information necessary to fully describe a species. An article by T. R. Soderstrom and S. M. Young (1983. A guide to collecting bamboos. Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden 70: 128-136.) explains how to make herbarium specimens of bamboos. We thank the Missouri Botanical Garden and Steve Young for permission to post a pdf version of this article. Anatomy & MicromorphologyAnatomy & Micromorphology protocols for the Bamboo Phylogeny Project is available in pdf format.
