EEOB at “STEM at the Zoo”

EEOB joined STEM at the Zoo at Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, engaging K–5 students with hands-on science activities! Nearly 300 visitors explored hands-on activities at our booth, including:

  • Dissecting microscope with fascinating specimens
  • Biology Bingo featuring plants, animals, and even dinosaurs
  • Create-your-own pollinator craft (coffee filter butterflies!)
  • Baboon behavior videos from Corinna

Graduate student Tam Tyner-Swanson summed it up perfectly:
“STEM at the Zoo was such a fun event! I always love doing outreach, but teaching kids about biology in such a unique setting was even more amazing! Who doesn’t want to do arts and crafts next to giraffes and rhinos?”

These activities gave families multiple ways to learn and engage with biology—making science fun and memorable!
