The Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology (EEOB) had an outstanding year marked by strong research productivity, impactful teaching, and engaged student training. Faculty, students, and postdocs collectively advanced scientific discovery while contributing to the university’s mission across research, education, and service.
Teaching & Curriculum Support
EEOB faculty continued to provide high quality instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- 49 unique courses taught this year reached more than 3000 students.
- The department supported the curriculum for three major programs—Biology, Genetics, and Environmental Science.
Training the Next Generation
Student training remains at the core of EEOB’s mission.
- Undergraduate involvement in research remained robust, with 57 students employed in labs and 24 volunteering to gain hands-on experience.
- Faculty advised 18 M.S. and 31 Ph.D. students, across 7 different graduate degree programs.
- This year, 3 M.S. and 8 Ph.D. students successfully completed their degrees.
- EEOB faculty contributed their expertise to 98 Academic Planning Committees, reflecting strong engagement in graduate education across Iowa State’s campus.
Research & Scholarship
EEOB scholars continued to make significant scientific advancements in the generation of new knowledge in the 2024-25 Academic Year. This knowledge was shared through:
- 112 submitted papers and 95 accepted, peer reviewed articles were published, alongside 5 new book chapters.
- 36 invited presentations by faculty given at conferences, workshops, and seminars, and coauthored 84 additional presentations.
- 48 presentations featured graduate trainees as lead authors, and 9 included undergraduate coauthors.
- Faculty also dedicated substantial time to the broader scientific ecosystem, providing 194 manuscript reviews for journals.
Grant Activity
EEOB scientists continued to excel in securing funding to support innovative science and student training.
- Faculty maintained 38 active grants throughout the year.
- Additionally, 44 proposals requesting a total of $27.8 million were submitted in support for future research initiatives and student training.
- 19 proposals were awarded, totaling $4.4 million in new funding.
