Central Iowa Project

In this project, I am interested in the life history of the Common Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) and the ecological interactions with their habitat. I use a mixture of sampling techniques including mark-recapture, camera traps, drift fences and coverboards. The central question to my research is "How do juvenile garter snakes survive the first winter?" The obvious answer would seem to be by going underground like adults but this is still not known for certain but the larger question is how are they finding the refuges? My research seeks to answer these questions with behavioral and thermal ecology modeling.
